Chlorine Free Diaper

There is a very good reason why I use chlorine free diapers and that is for the health of my baby. I had a nasty experience, or should I say scare with my first child when she was only a few months old and it turned me on to chlorine free diapers for life. Here is what happened.

We were young parents and pretty inexperienced and didn’t know there was such a thing as chlorine free diapers. We were expecting our first baby and with no access to a washing machine of our own we decided to use a diaper delivery service. Baby Sarah came along and we had our first delivery from the service and they smelt of chlorine but we didn’t know the potential hazards for our daughter so we used them happily for the next two months.

One of the things we did notice when using these diapers that were not chlorine free diapers was that she had a persistent rash on her bottom which never seemed to go away. We asked the doctor about it and he didn’t seem too concerned. Well one night my little angel Sarah wouldn’t stop crying and nothing would sooth her and I noticed the rash was worse than ever – we didn’t suspect that chlorine free diapers would solve the problem!

I kept a close eye on her and she finally fell asleep but I think that because I was so worried I only dozed until the baby monitor woke me up at about 4am. Sarah wasn’t crying but she didn’t sound right so I went to check on her and she was struggling to breathe. John, my husband bundled us all into the car straight away and drove to the closest Hospital emergency room less than 5 minutes away.

The doctors saw her right away concerned about her shallow breathing at such a young age. John and I sat in the waiting room for two hours while they examined and treated Sarah – it was the most harrowing two hours of my life with my beautiful daughter in trouble I just wanted to be there by her side. John was fantastic; he is the most supportive husband and held me the whole time that we waited for news from the doctor.

Eventually a nurse came out and saw us she was smiling so I was relieved and I think breathed out for the first time in hours. She took us in to see Sarah who was peacefully asleep I a crib her tiny hand wrapped around my finger when I stroked her face. The nurse then said that the doctor wanted to see us and took us to see the doctor in his office.

He told us that he thought she had a severe adverse reaction to chlorine and asked if she had come into contact with chlorine. We said that there was some on the diapers that we used from a service and he replied that that was more than likely what had caused her symptoms. He said to us that we needed to source and use chlorine free diapers that there were many options for chlorine free diapers these days and that would more than likely stop her from having any further issues.

We asked if he knew of any services that he knew that used chlorine free diapers and he gave us the name of one or two that we could ask about chlorine free diapers. We also chatted about disposable diapers and he said that most were not chlorine free diapers though it was becoming more common that they were producing chlorine free diapers because parents were now more conscious of how chlorine could affect their young babies.

Armed with this information about chlorine free diapers we headed back to the nursery. The hospital wanted to keep Sarah under observation for a few hours so we sat with her till we were allowed to take her home. The first thing that John did when we arrived home was ring up and yell at the diaper service telling them that they had almost killed our daughter and that they needed to have chlorine free diapers.

He felt better after that and arranged for them to pick up the diapers that were still at our apartment. He then rang up a couple of other diaper services to find chlorine free diapers that would be safe for Sarah. He was amazed at how few services were aware of how important chlorine free diapers were and had to speak to a few before he found one that could supply the number of chlorine free diapers that we needed. With the chlorine free diapers sorted I encouraged him to sleep, we had all had a long and scary night and needed some rest to regain our perspective.

And that is why I am very careful that I use chlorine free diapers. Sarah is now three years old and she didn’t have another attack like that night and for our son who is three months old we use chlorine free nappies to make sure that he is happy and healthy and not subjected to such a harsh chemical as chlorine in such an intimate way.

Chlorine free diapers are the best choice for baby’s health as well for the environment and are getting easier to find as people are becoming more aware of the dangers.
